Boardwalk Repairs - Spring 2017

  • Friday, Apr 28, 2017
Madison, Wis. (April 28, 2017) – The boardwalk along the shore of Lake Wingra was closed for the winter season. Earlier this month, it became clear that time and weather have taken a toll on the existing structures, as the materials approach the end of their natural and expected life. Significant repair or replacement is necessary.

While sections of the boardwalk are now re-opened, areas in need of repair remain closed. These sections are clearly marked. We ask that you respect the barricades.

Repairs to these sections will not begin before May 15, as the shore provides a habitat for spawning, and must remain undisturbed at least until that date. We anticipate repairs will begin shortly after, and will work toward re-opening the full boardwalk in early summer. When there are updates to this project, including re-opening, we will share them.

The boardwalk was dedicated in 2007, and came to be through a partnership between Edgewood College, the Madison Community Foundation, and volunteers and benefactors from the community. It was created with the ecology of Lake Wingra, our neighbors, Greater Madison, and of course students, in mind.

In the coming months, community partnerships will play an important role in any steps to ensure the long-term future of the boardwalk. In the meantime, if you are interested in financial support of repairs, or the future of the boardwalk, please email Gary Klein, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, at gklein@edgewood.edu.
