Madison, Wis. (December 19, 2019) -  Matthew J. Schroeder ’07, (left) Director of Military & Veterans Services, was among several Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU) representatives to testify at the Wisconsin State Senate’s Committee on University, Technical College, Children and Families in early December.

At issue is the 2019 Senate Bill 537, which would allow for educational grants to be issued to eligible student veterans and their dependents attending one of Wisconsin’s private colleges, similar to the Wisconsin GI Bill. Currently, that program only covers UW Colleges and Universities.

“This bill would potentially allow veterans and their families to have more access to the critical higher education options that are available to them at Edgewood College and all of the member institutions,” Schroeder said. “We are able to provide a unique experience for all of our students; one that they may not receive at a larger institution, where the focus may not be directed specifically to student needs and satisfaction.”

At the hearing, Rolf Wegenke, President of WAICU, also testified.

“The state has a long history of providing students with the educational opportunity that is the best fit for them,” Wegenke said. “The state is also known for treating veterans fairly and equitably.  This legislation builds on that record.”
