Edgewood College was founded as a teacher’s college and, with over 80 years of experience, we continue to excel in the area of teacher preparation. As a student in the Education department, you will benefit from a wide range of experiences in the field during the first part of your study so that you can intelligently plan your course of study, determine your own suitability for teaching, decide in what area you might serve best, and begin building a network of professional contacts.
You are required to complete a minimum of 100 pre-student teaching hours, including 50 hours of multicultural experience, before your student teaching placement. You will be encouraged from your freshman year to work with children in daycare centers, hospitals, nurseries, daycare centers, hospitals, kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools, playgrounds, and other areas. These experiences are valuable for your future teaching career. With a grade school and high school on campus, you may have the opportunity to do your practicum work on campus! These in-classroom experiences are invaluable as you finalize your choice to become a teacher.
At Edgewood College, we place a strong emphasis on preparing teachers to meet the professional demands of contemporary education. Our Teacher Education program emerges from three major sources of influence: our tradition, our mission, and our profession. These influences are evident in the program’s respect for and attention to diversity, in the participation in the professional community, and in the practice of continuous assessment, evaluation, and improvement.
The Teacher Education licensing programs are approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WDPI). Edgewood College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and also by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
*The Child Life major prepares students for entry into the health care system as trained professionals who provide psychosocial care for children and advocacy roles for families. Child Life professionals provide services in hospitals, clinics, hospice centers, and other such service delivery situations. In both ambulatory and inpatient settings, Child Life professionals provide children and youth opportunities for mastery of their environment for play, for learning, for family involvement, and for peer interaction. Child Life candidates complete an intensive internship. After graduation and entry into employment, they take the Professional Certification (CCLS) examination of the Child Life Council, the national professional organization for Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS).
