Student Success Mentor and Interpretive Assistant for Urban Educator Cohort Pathway (UECP) – Part-time
DESCRIPTION OF JOB:
The Student Success Mentor & Interpretive Assistant (SSMIA) works closely with the Department of Curriculum & Instruction (C&I) faculty and staff to support program objectives for student success, providing graduate and degree completion candidates who are new to Edgewood College and part of the UECP with mentoring and interpretation services related to classroom settings, advising, enrollment, registration, academic support, and communication with other college departments (business office, financial aid, disability & accessibility services, etc.). To achieve this, the SSMIA will collaborate and communicate with staff and faculty members in the Department of C&I, as well as the campus community at-large. Student coaching, mentoring, and interpretive assistance will be provided, utilizing targeted support for select students admitted to the UECP program.
This position is a part-time, grant-funded role, slated to work approximately 4 hours per week.
Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The SSMIA will work closely with assigned students in order to:
- Provide bilingual support by interpreting at admissions sessions with prospective candidates and/or through the translation of key resources.
- Participate in initial new student advising sessions (group or individual), in which students engage with the ESL/Bilingual student teaching manual or program orientation to understand aspects of the program and their program pathway.
- Facilitate student learning in coursework; gain familiarity with the learning management system sites for courses students are taking; visit class gathering for introductions (as needed or if requested); offer drop-in support office hours on Webex on a bi-weekly basis, providing tutoring sessions for students as needed.
- Monitor and support student performance and advise students on academic issues as needed.
- Provide assistance for conversations with other offices on campus (e.g., business, registrar’s, Edgewood Central)
The SSMIA will work closely with Department of C&I faculty and staff in order to:
- Collaborate with program coordinators, graduate advising, graduate admissions, and coordinators for clinical and licensing to provide consistent, effective learning and support for students.
- Maintain on-going communication with department staff who engage frequently with identified students, sharing FERPA compliant information about coursework, advising, and student progress. Work with the Candidate Review Team to identify needs and develop support plans.
- Attend and assist with the following events each semester/year, as needed:
- New student orientation at the beginning of each semester
- Celebration of Learning Concluding Ceremony, early May
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Necessary Education or Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in education or a related field
- Minimum one year experience in a student-facing position in PK-12 education
- Successful experience, either as employee or as a student, in higher education setting
- Experience with translation or interpretation
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Ability to plan for and deliver quality academic support
- Ability to organize and conduct mentoring sessions effectively
- Strong oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish
- Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) technology such as online course management systems (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas) and video conference platforms
- Ability to relate to college students and demonstrate flexibility in managing barriers that impact effective programming
- Willingness to provide inclusive support for students at Edgewood College
- Capacity to become familiar with a range of campus services
