Kel Isaj ’15 has built a career around more than just great food—he’s created welcoming spaces that bring communities together. As a restaurant owner and entrepreneur, Kel operates several family-focused dining concepts across northern Illinois, including Sophia’s RestaurantBridge Street Pizza & ChickenThe Horseshoe Bar, and Cindy’s on 34. A present and engaged owner, he is deeply involved in daily operations and committed to crafting restaurants known for quality food, strong teams, and a true sense of community.

After graduating from Edgewood University in 2015, Kel accepted a human resources position in Madison and quickly realized his passion was rooted elsewhere. Choosing to pursue his own path, he began working in the restaurant industry. He spent the next five years gaining experience and starting his own business with a family dining concept in Iowa before expanding into Illinois. Ten years later, Kel remains focused on engaged leadership and fostering inviting environments for his guests.

From Edgewood to Entrepreneurship

Edgewood University played a pivotal role in preparing Kel for entrepreneurship. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business, which strengthened his leadership, communication, and decision-making skills—tools he uses daily in overseeing finances, operations, and team development. His time at Edgewood increased his ability to think strategically, collaborate effectively, and approach real-world challenges with confidence.

Kel credits Professor Kelly Mullen as a major influence, pushing him beyond his comfort zone. She helped him grow more confident in both his academic and professional life. A student-athlete on the soccer team, Kel learned the value of discipline, leadership, and performing under pressure—skills that continue to shape his approach to business. “When things get tough, discipline and consistency are what help you learn, adapt, and keep building forward,” Kel shares.

The Value of Community

Some of Kel’s favorite moments come from working alongside his employees and watching guests become “regulars.” For him, building something meaningful together – both with his team and the community – is the most rewarding part of the work. Looking ahead, Kel remains focused on growth – strengthening the success of his restaurants, developing thriving teams, and expanding new concepts rooted in quality, consistency, and memorable experiences.

Anchored in skill development, personal mentorship, and career exploration, the Bachelor of Business degree path at Edgewood University prepares students for post-graduate success – whether through accounting, accelerated study, or traditional pathways.
