Madison, Wis. (July 24, 2025) – In June, a group of 13 staff and students from Edgewood University and Dominican University embarked on a journey of faith, courage, and discovery on the Namekagon River in northern Wisconsin.
A collaborative experience between the two Sinsinawa Dominican sponsored institutions, the second annual Dominican Wilderness Immersion provided a supportive environment for students from all backgrounds to learn about, and practice, our shared values of study, prayer, community, and service in the beauty of the outdoors and rhythms of Creation.
Through small-group discussions, time for contemplation, and by working together to navigate the daily challenges of camping, students grew in their own personal resilience, spiritual connection to the natural world, and ability to work together across differences.
In a time of ecological crisis, the experience offered a sacred space to unplug, reflect, and connect with Creation, developing leaders with an ecological consciousness who are equipped to respond to the needs of our times.
“The trip gave me a chance to connect with nature, learn about different cultures, and grow personally and spiritually,” one of the students said. “The way everyone respected the environment and looked out for each other taught me a lot about teamwork and shared responsibility.”
(Editor’s note: Special thanks to Dominican University, River Forest, Illinois, for sharing the great photography below, and for producing a wonderful video documenting the impact of the experience. Edgewood University and Dominican University are sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa.)
