Edgewood University rededicated the Queer Student Center (QSC) in its new home, Predolin 214. More than a student lounge, the QSC is a place where queer students can feel seen, supported, and celebrated. It is a space for connection, learning, joy, and community. A vibrant reminder that joy, connection, and belonging are part of the Edgewood experience.

The rededication celebrated not only a new chapter for the center, but also its history. Established in 2019, the QSC exists today because of the persistence and vision of LGBTQ+ students, staff, and faculty who advocated for years to make it a reality. Their work, supported by national voices calling for inclusion within the Catholic tradition, positioned Edgewood as one of only a small number of Catholic colleges and universities with such a space.

Man talking to people

Vice President and Dean of Students Matthew Sullivan, Ed.D. ’23 was part of the leadership that helped set up the QSC. At the ceremony, he reflected on that journey sharing, “The Queer Student Center at Edgewood officially opened in the fall of 2019 but the work to get it approved and established occurred for many years before that. With the creation of this center, students told me they felt they belonged. That who they were was welcomed on this campus. That their identity was recognized. The approval and creation of the Queer Student Center meant so much and changed the trajectory for so many.” Quoting activist Marsha P. Johnson, Sullivan reminded attendees of the ongoing call to inclusion, “How many years has it taken people to realize that we are all brothers and sisters and human beings in the human race? I mean how many years does it take people to see that?”

As the QSC begins its next chapter, its mission remains to collaboratively empower and advocate for a campus where all LGBTQ+ students feel comfortable and have access to an authentic Edgewood University experience. This center serves as a haven of liberation and solidarity, and serves as a place to share experiences, build community, and be fully oneself.

This moment highlights Edgewood University’s ongoing commitment to keeping equity, belonging, and love at the core of our mission. As we celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, we are reminded that history lives in the present. The QSC stands not only as a symbol of past advocacy and a celebration of progress, but also as a call to continue building an inclusive campus for generations to come.
