Buenos días and bonjour from the Foreign Language Department. Our Spanish and French programs offer a wide range of classes in language, culture and literature, plus numerous extra-curricular activities in and around Madison to enhance your learning experience. Our faculty are deeply involved in teaching and scholarship and equally committed to their roles as advisors and mentors. As a Foreign Language student, you can choose from a wide range of classes and programs offered across campus to ensure your liberal arts education includes global perspectives.
When you study a language, you gain skills far beyond the ability to communicate. You develop a cultural awareness that prepares you to live and work in a diverse society, while deepening your understanding of your own beliefs and values. In an increasingly multicultural and international society, your language studies can serve you well in many different careers, and you’ll find ample opportunity to put your communication skills to work. Edgewood College language graduates have advanced to careers in education, government, social work and human services, translation and interpretation, law, business and media, among many other fields.
The Foreign Languages Department works with Edgewood College's Center for Global Education to offer short-term and full-semester study abroad programs in a number of countries—including France, Peru, Costa Rica, Spain, Argentina and Uruguay—through coordinated arrangements with other universities or our memberships in the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) and International Studies Abroad (ISA).
Additionally, through our collaborative program with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, you have the opportunity to study other languages, while still enjoying the benefits of a smaller liberal arts college.
