Bindley Ceramics Collection Exhibition opens at Edgewood College Gallery

Madison, Wis. (March 21, 2014) – Selections from the Dennis & Colleen Bindley Ceramics Collection, a survey of contemporary ceramics from the 1970s to the present, is now on view at the Edgewood College Gallery. The exhibition reflects the Bindley’s passion for ceramics as they have slowly built this important collection of contemporary sculpture and vessels for more than 40 years.

The Bindley Ceramics Collection runs Thursday, March 20 through Saturday, April 26, 2014.

The public is invited to a special Closing Reception from 5:00 -7:00 pm, Thursday, April 24, featuring remarks by David Smith, Professor of Art at Edgewood College, and the collectors Dennis & Colleen Bindley.

Co-curators David Smith, Professor of Art (ceramics), and David Wells, Gallery Director, have selected just over one hundred artworks – a rather small segment of the Bindley’s collection. The exhibit is a primer in the versatility of clay as a medium and the vast range of aesthetic possibilities it offers for artistic expression. From functional works to sculpture, from massive to intricately delicate and from figurative to abstract, every piece reflects a mastery of technical skill and formal exploration.

Each artist’s singular vision is brought to life through their choices of clay body – stoneware, earthenware, porcelain; forming technique – wheel, coil, hand-building, slab; finish and glazing style – burnishing, salt, terra sigillata, multi-color, sgraffito; and firing method – electric, raku, anagama, saggar, wood.

Selections from the Dennis & Colleen Bindley Ceramics Collection present highly individual works by ninety-four artists who expand the vocabulary of ideas, skills and possibilities of ceramics and represent several generations of American and European luminaries in the field. Some of the most recognized ceramic artists included are Warren MacKenzie, Lucie Rie, Hans Coper, Ruth Duckworth, Jun Kaneko, Paul Soldner, Lisa Clague, Colin Pearson, Barbara Gonzales, Ted Randall, Don Reitz, Diana Farfan, and Daniel Rhodes.
