Center for Multicultural Education Welcomes Guest Lecturer Dr. Monica M. White

Madison, Wis. (February 9, 2015) – The Center for Multicultural Education at Edgewood College welcomes Dr. Monica M. White as part of the CME Distinguished Lecture Series. Dr. White is Assistant Professor of Environmental Justice at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. White will deliver “Black Farmers, Urban Agriculture, and Increasing Access to Healthy Food in Detroit” from 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm, Thursday, February 19, 2015, in the Sonderegger Science Center at Edgewood College. The public is invited and there is no admission charge.

Current conversations on the topic of urban agriculture focus on the City of Detroit. With available land and difficulty accessing healthy food for the city’s most vulnerable populations, citizens are returning to a rich agricultural tradition. This presentation will offer a historical analysis of agriculture in Detroit and discuss contemporary community-based food systems approaches to respond to food insecurity, with particular attention to the work of black farmers and the impact of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network.

The event is presented by the Environmental Studies Program and the Center for Multicultural Education and Ethnic Studies Program in the School of Integrative Studies at Edgewood College.
