The Center for Healthcare Education and Simulation (CHES) seeks a 75% Healthcare Education Simulation Specialist.

CHES is a joint venture between Edgewood College, Inc., SSM St. Mary's Hospital – Madison, WI, and UnityPoint Health Meriter Hospital – Madison, WI. The person is expected to travel to various sites throughout Wisconsin including but not limited to Madison, Janesville, and Beloit. Schedule and location will vary depending on weekly needs.

This is a hybrid simulation role, performing a wide range of responsibilities needed to support the simulation and skills lab team needs of all three entities. The position reports to the CHES Operations Manager and receives additional guidance from the Executive Director and senior Healthcare Education and Simulation Specialists. Specifically, the person will plan simulation learning activities with stakeholders in accordance with healthcare simulation best practices; coordinate lab resources; execute simulation sessions perform set up and take down of supplies and equipment; and promote the center to internal and external clients. The specialist is responsible for establishing and maintaining collaborative and effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, instructors, students, staff, and visitors to the sites.

Responsibilities

Plan and Execute Simulation and Skills Lab Experiences

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to create and deliver simulations that are appropriate to the learners/participants.
    • Develop and deliver simulation scenarios in accordance with best practices in both education and simulation research.
    • Ensure objectives and evaluations are aligned with goals of the simulation, integrating any accreditation or regulatory requirements.
    • Identify and implement creative ideas to ensure simulation activities are as realistic as possible.
    • Perform troubleshooting assistance with simulation operations and technical support as needed.
    • Collaborate with other CHES staff to ensure consistent application of simulation practices

  • Perform Pre-Simulation Activities
    • Program and execute patient scenarios utilizing technology such as simulators, computers, software, and electronic medical record technology.
    • Create and distribute pre-simulation and supportive learning materials and documentation.
    • Prepare scenario props and moulage.
    • Support the training and orientation of instructors to effectively facilitate simulation sessions.
    • Obtain signed release/confidentiality forms from learners/participants.

  • Execute Simulations
    • Greet and orient students/learners to CHES and to the simulation activity, perform patient hand-off, set the tone for the learning environment.
    • Serve as a simulation operator by running all simulation technology (manikins/simulators, audio/video equipment, classroom monitors, patient monitors, microphones, computer and editing software).
    • Speak as the patient during simulations using manikins/full-bodied simulators.
    • Prepare other patient actors for simulation.
    • Occasionally serve as a patient actor for appropriate simulations and/or

  • Perform Post-Simulation Activities
    • Provide and accept feedback to/from facilitators/faculty and learners.
    • Manage simulation recordings as needed for debriefing.
    • Administer evaluations of simulation lab experience
    • Perform collaborative evaluation of simulation and identification of ways to improve the experience

  • Set up of laboratory and classroom spaces at multiple sites.
    • Collaborate with other CHES staff on communication with faculty/facilitators/ to coordinate schedules for weekly set up / clean up at multiple sites.
    • Collaborate with other CHES staff to gather and arrange/set up supplies and equipment according to weekly skills lab and lesson plans; ensure proper staging; clean and reset after use.
    • Contribute to maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment to monitor expirations and prevent depletion or surplus.

Collaborate with healthcare professionals and staff

  • Assist with scheduling and coordination of classroom and lab spaces in collaboration with other CHES staff.
  • Support instructors in preparing, facilitating, and debriefing of simulation activities to optimize the learning experience.
  • Communicate with instructors about any equipment failures, weather-related changes, or events that may impact their simulation or lab sessions.
  • Provide technical support and advice to the extent possible.

Maintain Human Simulators and Lab Equipment

  • Install new software or hardware upgrades to the simulation technology and lab equipment.
  • Perform operational checks and maintenance on equipment, review technical notes from scheduled preventive maintenance sessions scheduled, clean equipment per manufacturer recommendations to proactively maintain equipment.
  • Ensure simulation technology and equipment is kept secure and safe.
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures, consult with technical support as necessary and determine the need for vendor repair.
  • Perform simulation and audio and video equipment repairs per manufacturer specifications.
  • Ensure simulators are charged, functioning, and ready to use.
  • Coordinate vendor repair of equipment as required.
  • Maintain an understanding of, and utilize as appropriate, the vendor contract and equipment warranties.

Assist with daily operation

  • Monitor and maintain simulation lab supplies.
  • Publish and editing scheduled classes on the scheduling calendar and CHES website.
  • Assist learners with course registrations via phone, email, and website.
  • Develop reports and documentation related to lab processes and procedures.
  • Maintain a professional and safe environment.

Maintain Simulation Lab Documentation

  • Collaborate on the development, maintenance, and enforcement of documented lab policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain related forms such as Confidentiality or Release Forms
  • Produce simulation orientation materials.
  • Manage digital media.
  • Utilize and navigate the CHES website.

Assist the Executive Director in Strategic Growth and Management of CHES

  • Advocate for integration of simulation standards of best practice into courses overall CHES operations.
  • Contribute to planning and development of the annual CHES budget as needed; suggest opportunities for new courses or funding.
  • Ensure appropriate utilization of lab resources and reconciliation of budget variances with the Executive Director.
  • Participate in community outreach programs and marketing such as conducting tours; conducting sample simulations; co-coordinating youth immersion experiences.

Maintain Professional Development

  • Maintain competencies in technology.
  • Continuously seek and apply information on best practices in simulation education.
  • Attend conferences and training sessions regularly to increase and maintain knowledge related to simulation education.
  • Research future simulation products
  • Advance knowledge and skills and commit to working toward simulation certification.

Job Qualifications

Necessary Education or Work Experience

  • Requires current registration/ certification / licensure in health discipline.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required
  • Minimum of two years of clinical experience preferably with medical/surgical, critical care, pediatric, OB, ICU, EMS, or paramedic areas
  • Experience with healthcare simulations; skills laboratory; nursing or healthcare teaching

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Broad understanding of computer technology and electronics as person will work with an array of technology including high-fidelity simulators, audiovisual, network and information systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint,
  • Internet and database use
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple items simultaneously
  • Work well under pressure
  • Self- motivated and require little to no supervision with the ability to work independently
  • Exemplary demonstration of professionalism, commitment, and loyalty
  • Ability to perform independently at all site locations
